O que está acontecendo atrás daquele vulcão? Muita coisa. Em primeiro lugar, o próprio vulcão, chamado Kirkjufell, é muito antigo e está localizado no oeste da Islândia, próximo à cidade de Grundarfjörður.
Em frente à íngreme estrutura escarpada há um fiorde que havia acabado de começar a congelar quando a foto foi tirada — em meados de dezembro de 2012.
Embora muito esmaecida a olho nu, as belas cores da aurora de fundo se tornaram bastante aparentes com a exposição de 25 segundos.
O que torna esta imagem particularmente notável, no entanto, é que ela também capta riscas do chuveiro de meteoros das Geminides — meteoros que poderiam não ser evidentes se a aurora fosse muito mais brilhante.
Ao longe, à esquerda, está a faixa da Via Láctea,enquanto estrelas de nossa parte local da Via Láctea aparecem espalhadas pelo plano de fundo. Neste fim de semana que passou, a chuva de meteoros das Perseidas chegou ao pico e propocionou belas experiências visuais aos entusiastas de astronomia.
What's going on behind that volcano? Quite a bit. First of all, the volcano itself, named Kirkjufell, is quite old and located in western Iceland near the town of Grundarfjörður.
In front of the steeply-sloped structure lies a fjord that had just began to freeze when the above image was taken —in mid-December of 2012.
Although quite faint to the unaided eye, the beautiful colors of background aurorae became quite apparent on the 25-second exposure.
What makes this image is of particular note, though, is that also captures streaks from the Geminids meteor shower — meteors that might not have been evident were the aurora much brighter.
Far in the distance, on the left, is the band of our Milky Way Galaxy, while stars from our local part of the Milky Way appear spread across the background. This past weekend the Perseids meteor shower peaked and provided sky enthusiasts with their own memorable visual experiences.
